PRBP promotes socio-economic development by addressing root causes of instability and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for borderland communities. The programme recognizes that arid and semi-arid lands covering 70% of the region's landmass and home to over 100 million people are essential drivers of regional growth rather than peripheral areas. By enhancing access to income-generating opportunities, improving value chains, and facilitating economic integration across borders, PRBP unlocks the untapped potential of these dynamic regions where livestock, trade, and cross-border commerce have sustained communities for generations.
The economic recovery pillar focuses on shared natural resource management, recognizing that water, pasture, and grazing lands do not respect political boundaries. Through improved governance of these resources, promotion of livestock marketing and cross-border trade, and building climate-resilient livelihoods, the programme addresses the environmental and economic challenges that borderland communities face. PRBP ensures that development initiatives are integrated into government planning systems for long-term sustainability, building on the rich cultural heritage and social networks that make these borderlands unique and economically vibrant parts of the Horn of Africa.
